Here's the gist with riluzole and coffee charcoal: charcoal is porous and a bit like a sponge in your gut. If you swallow them close together, the charcoal can grab onto the riluzole before your body absorbs it. That means less of the medicine actually gets into your system, and for an ALS drug you want every dose working as intended.

This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in general, not on a study with riluzole specifically, so think of it as a sensible precaution rather than a proven problem. The easy fix is timing: keep them at least two hours apart so the charcoal isn't soaking up your dose. Before mixing the two, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Riluzole Used For?

Brand names: Rilutek, Tiglutik, Exservan

Riluzole is approved to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — the progressive neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This indication is shared across all available riluzole products, including tablets (Rilutek, riluzole), the dissolving oral film (Exservan), and the oral suspension (Tiglutik).

Tiglutik oral suspension is notable in that it can also be given through a PEG-tube (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube) for patients who have difficulty swallowing.
