Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like a sponge in the gut. Because of its porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medications you swallow before your body has a chance to absorb them. With Koselugo (selumetinib), that could mean less of the medicine actually gets into your bloodstream, and this is a drug you really want fully absorbed since it's working to slow tumor growth in NF1.

This concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves rather than direct studies with selumetinib, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, to be safe, keep the two well apart in time (at least two hours), and please run it by your child's oncology team or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Selumetinib Used For?

Brand name: Koselugo

Koselugo (selumetinib) is approved for adults and children 1 year of age and older who have neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) — a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue — when they also have symptomatic, inoperable plexiform neurofibromas (large, deep nerve tumors that cannot be surgically removed and are causing problems).

Both the Koselugo capsule and Koselugo oral granule formulations are approved for this use. The oral granule form is intended for patients who have difficulty swallowing whole capsules.
