ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Sulfisoxazole
Sulfisoxazole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like the activated charcoal you've probably heard of. Its porous, sponge-like surface can grab onto things in your gut, and that includes Sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), an antibiotic you swallow. If you take them too close together, the charcoal may soak up some of the antibiotic before your body can absorb it, leaving you with less medicine in your system.
Why that matters: for an antibiotic, getting less than the full dose can mean your infection isn't fully treated. The fix is easy, just space them out by at least two hours. This is based on how charcoal behaves rather than hard studies, but separating the timing is a smart, safe move. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sulfisoxazole page
“Sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin) is a sulfonamide antibiotic, and its interaction list is one to approach carefully, with five of the 107 ingredients on file rated major. The most striking is PABA, a supplement that feeds the very pathway this antibiotic blocks and can cancel out its bacteria-killing effect entirely.”

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
