ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Tretinoin
Tretinoin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal works like a sponge in your gut. It has a porous, charcoal-like surface that can grab onto things passing through your digestive tract, including medicine. If you take your oral tretinoin (the capsules used for APL) too close to a dose of coffee charcoal, less of the drug may get absorbed into your body. That could mean you get a weaker dose than your cancer treatment needs, which matters a lot here.
This concern is based on how charcoal generally behaves, not on a specific tretinoin study, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, to be safe, separating them by at least two hours is wise. Because this is a serious cancer medicine, please don't change anything on your own. Check with your oncology team or pharmacist before combining the two.

About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
About Tretinoin

Tretinoin cream 0.02% is approved to help lessen the look of fine facial wrinkles in people who also follow a comprehensive skin care and sun-avoidance program — including daily sunscreen, protective clothing, and moisturizers.
It's important to know what tretinoin does not do: it will not erase wrinkles, reverse sun damage, repair deeply weathered skin, or restore younger-looking skin. It has also not been shown to help with coarse or deep wrinkles, rough skin texture, dark spots, or sagging skin.

Tretinoin Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Tretinoin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Coffee Charcoal — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
