A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.

Here's something a lot of people don't realize: birth control pills like Ovulen (which combine ethynodiol diacetate and mestranol) can nudge your copper levels upward over time. The estrogen part tends to raise the copper your blood carries. On its own this usually isn't a big deal, but if you also take a copper supplement on top of that, the two could stack and push your copper higher than normal.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not something proven to cause harm in most women, and it's rated minor. Copper you get from regular food is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering a concentrated copper supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
