CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol
Segesterone Acetate, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Copper interacts with.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something a little different from most interactions. With Annovera, the estrogen in it (ethinyl estradiol) can gently nudge your body to hold onto more copper in your blood. This isn't about the supplement changing how your birth control works. Your contraception should still do its job, and you don't need to worry about your hormones being weaker or stronger because of copper.
The concern flows the other way: adding a copper supplement on top of the estrogen could push your copper levels higher than normal. For most folks that's harmless, and the everyday copper you get from food is no issue. But routinely taking a concentrated copper pill while on Annovera could occasionally cause stomach upset or nausea. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on how these work, not strong real-world proof. If you take a copper supplement, just run it by your pharmacist first.
