CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone, Ferrous Fumarate falls under CONTRACEPTIVE DRUGS — the group Copper interacts with.

Theoretically, taking copper with contraceptive drugs might increase the levels and toxic effects of copper.
A meta-analysis of clinical studies suggests that chronic use of oral contraceptives increases serum copper levels by a mean of 57 mcg/dL. In most people, this resulted in levels above the normal reference range for copper.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the combo of ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, and a little iron). The estrogen part tends to nudge your body's copper levels up over time. So if you add a copper supplement on top, you're stacking more copper onto an already higher baseline. In theory, that could push your copper too high.

This isn't about the pill working less well or harming the medicine itself. It's the other direction: your copper levels may climb. Too much copper can cause nausea, stomach upset, or feeling run-down. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how things work, not strong real-world proof, and food-level copper is rarely an issue. If you take a copper supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
