Deflazacort falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Cordyceps interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that cordyceps stimulates the immune system. However, limited clinical research suggests that taking cordyceps may lower the necessary therapeutic dose of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, which suggests that cordyceps may have an immunosuppressive effect.

Here's the tricky part with cordyceps and deflazacort: this steroid works by calming down an overactive immune system in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Cordyceps, on the other hand, has been shown in lab and animal studies to stimulate the immune system, so in theory it could push against what your medicine is trying to do. The flip side is muddier, because some limited human research hints cordyceps might actually add to immune-suppressing effects.

Honestly, the evidence here is thin and mostly theoretical, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. But since deflazacort is doing important work, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding cordyceps rather than starting it on your own.

Cordyceps is a fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine for energy, exercise performance, and lung and immune support. Human research is limited and mostly low quality, so its benefits are not well proven. It appears generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality varies and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
