Nusinersen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Cordyceps interacts with.

Theoretically, cordyceps may increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that cordyceps extract inhibits platelet aggregation and function. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with Spinraza (nusinersen). It's given as an injection into the spinal fluid through a lumbar puncture, and cordyceps may have a mild blood-thinning effect. In lab and animal studies, cordyceps slowed down how platelets clump together, so the theoretical worry is a bit more bleeding or bruising, especially around a spinal injection site.

I'll be honest, this hasn't actually been reported in people, and the evidence is weak. Cordyceps itself doesn't change how nusinersen works, since nusinersen isn't broken down by the usual liver enzymes. Still, because the medicine involves a spinal tap, it's worth telling your care team you take cordyceps so they can watch for any bleeding concerns.

What Is Nusinersen Injection Used For?

Brand name: Spinraza

Spinraza (nusinersen) is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by reducing the body's ability to make a protein called SMN (survival motor neuron). Spinraza is approved for pediatric and adult patients with SMA.

Spinraza is given by intrathecal injection — directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord — so the medicine can reach the central nervous system where it's needed most.
