Here's the connection people are asking about: alectinib (Alecensa) can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight on its own, so it's already known to cause sunburn more easily than you'd expect. Coriander contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, also showed some sun-sensitizing activity. The thought is that taking the two together could add up and raise your chance of a sunburn or skin reaction.

I'll be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, and the everyday cilantro you cook with is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated coriander extracts or essential oils are a different story. Since alectinib itself already calls for good sun care, keep using sunscreen and protective clothing, and check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using strong coriander supplements.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
