PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Oxytetracycline , Polymyxin B

Oxytetracycline , Polymyxin B falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Coriander interacts with.

Theoretically, coriander might increase the risk of photosensitivity when taken with photosensitizing drugs.
Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of coriander, has photosensitizing effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: tetracycline antibiotics like the oxytetracycline in Terak can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than usual. Coriander contains a compound called coriandrin that, at least in lab studies, may also act as a mild light-sensitizer. Put the two together and the worry is a slightly higher chance of redness, burning, or a stronger reaction on sun-exposed skin.

Now, the honest part: this is theoretical and based only on weak, anecdotal and test-tube evidence. Eating cilantro in your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated coriander extracts or oils are the bigger question mark. To be safe, use sunscreen and limit strong sun while on this medicine, and check with your pharmacist if you're using coriander supplements.
