Drug & supplement interaction

Coriander + Finasteride

Finasteride brand names: Propecia, Proscar.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Coriander and Finasteride in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Coriander and Finasteride

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Finasteride and Coriander in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Coriander safety at a glance

Coriander overall Generally safe Coriander is generally safe in normal food amounts for most people.
Pregnancy Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but concentrated medicinal doses or essential oil should be avoided without medical advice.
Breastfeeding Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but medicinal doses lack safety data, so use caution.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Finasteride

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Finasteride is filed under 3 classifications — including cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates, oral drugs. Coriander has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), antihypertensive drugs (moderate) and cns depressants (moderate) — and none of Finasteride’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Coriander and Finasteride May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. 2 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Reported for Coriander but not commonly for Finasteride: wheezing.

Effects for Finasteride come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Coriander come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 59,984 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Finasteride that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Coriander only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Finasteride page lists 138 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Finasteride page

“The supplement list for finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) is one I would read carefully rather than skim, because three of its 138 entries are rated major. Almost everything here works through the same liver enzyme, CYP3A4, that clears finasteride.”

About Coriander

What is Coriander?

Coriander
  • Digestive upset and gas
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Mild antimicrobial (topical)
  • Diarrhea and IBS symptoms
  • General flavoring and traditional remedy

Coriander (also called cilantro) is a common cooking herb and spice that has long been used in traditional medicine for digestive complaints. As a food it is generally safe for most people, but high-quality human studies supporting its medicinal benefits are limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts or essential oils.

Coriandrum sativum · Apiaceae · Seeds (fruit), leaves, and essential oil · Culinary spice and herb, tea, capsules, tincture/extract, essential oil

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Coriander is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Coriander record says about it on its own.

Coriander: dosing

There is no standardized or proven medicinal dose of coriander. Amounts used in studies and traditional remedies vary widely depending on the form (tea, seeds, capsule, or oil).If you choose to use a coriander supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount. Essential oils are very concentrated and should not be taken by mouth without professional guidance.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets are used in men for two main purposes, depending on the product. Which one you take depends on the strength and brand your prescriber chose.

Enlarged prostate (BPH): Proscar and finasteride tablets labeled for BPH treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. They improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to urinate). They also reduce the risk of needing surgery such as TURP or prostatectomy. With the alpha-blocker doxazosin, they reduce the risk of BPH symptoms getting worse. They are not approved to prevent prostate cancer.

Male pattern hair loss: Propecia and finasteride tablets labeled for hair loss treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Efficacy in bitemporal recession (receding at the temples) has not been established. These products are not for use in women.
