Atractylodes + Finasteride
Finasteride brand names: Propecia, Proscar.
Atractylodes has a minor interaction with Finasteride. Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Finasteride
Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear finasteride out of your system. In lab and animal studies, atractylodes seemed to slow down a similar enzyme. If that happened in people, finasteride could hang around a bit longer and build up slightly, which in theory might nudge up its usual effects, things like reduced sex drive, trouble with erections, or mild breast tenderness.
But I want to keep this in perspective. This is only a theoretical concern based on high-dose animal data, and it has never been shown in humans. Finasteride is also not a prodrug, so it doesn't need this enzyme to work. The risk here is low. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

By severity: 3 major · 94 moderate · 41 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Finasteride page
“The supplement list for finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) is one I would read carefully rather than skim, because three of its 138 entries are rated major. Almost everything here works through the same liver enzyme, CYP3A4, that clears finasteride.”

About Atractylodes
What is Atractylodes?
- Digestive upset and poor appetite
- Bloating and fluid retention
- General fatigue or 'weakness'
- Diarrhea
- Support within traditional formulas
Atractylodes is a root used for centuries in traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Thai medicine, mostly for digestive complaints and fatigue, often as part of multi-herb formulas. Modern research is still early and mostly from lab and animal studies, so its true benefits in people are not well proven. If you want to try it, talk with a pharmacist or doctor first, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Finasteride
What Is Finasteride Used For?
Brand names: Propecia, Proscar
Finasteride tablets are used in men for two main purposes, depending on the product. Which one you take depends on the strength and brand your prescriber chose.
Enlarged prostate (BPH): Proscar and finasteride tablets labeled for BPH treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. They improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to urinate). They also reduce the risk of needing surgery such as TURP or prostatectomy. With the alpha-blocker doxazosin, they reduce the risk of BPH symptoms getting worse. They are not approved to prevent prostate cancer.
Male pattern hair loss: Propecia and finasteride tablets labeled for hair loss treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Efficacy in bitemporal recession (receding at the temples) has not been established. These products are not for use in women.
