Why this applies to Finasteride

Finasteride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: psyllium is a gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your gut alongside a pill, it can sometimes grab onto that medicine and slow down or slightly change how much gets absorbed. With finasteride, this is really just a theoretical concern. We have no specific studies showing psyllium throws off finasteride levels, and the overall interaction is rated minor.

Finasteride is not a prodrug, so it works just fine on its own once absorbed. The worst-case worry would be slightly less getting into your system, which could mean a bit less benefit for prostate symptoms or hair loss. An easy fix that sidesteps the whole issue: take your finasteride first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. As always, run it by your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Finasteride

What Is Finasteride Used For?

Brand names: Propecia, Proscar

Finasteride tablets (including the brand Proscar) are used in men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH) to improve urinary symptoms, lower the risk of acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate), and reduce the need for prostate surgery. Finasteride tablets may also be used alongside the alpha-blocker doxazosin to slow the progression of BPH symptoms.

Propecia (and finasteride 1 mg coated tablets) is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Propecia is not approved for use in women, and its effectiveness for hair loss at the temples has not been established. Finasteride is not approved for the prevention of prostate cancer.
