Phellodendron + Finasteride
Finasteride brand names: Propecia, Proscar.
Phellodendron has a moderate interaction with Finasteride. Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Finasteride
Finasteride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for finasteride: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break it down. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can mildly slow that same enzyme. So in theory, taking the two together could let a little more finasteride hang around in your body than usual.
The good news is this is a theoretical concern, based on how the chemistry works rather than real-world reports of problems. Finasteride is generally well tolerated, and any small bump would more likely nudge typical side effects (things like reduced sex drive or breast tenderness) than cause something dramatic. Still, if you're considering a phellodendron supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Finasteride page
“The supplement list for finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) is one I would read carefully rather than skim, because three of its 138 entries are rated major. Almost everything here works through the same liver enzyme, CYP3A4, that clears finasteride.”

About Phellodendron
What is Phellodendron?
- Digestive complaints and diarrhea
- Inflammation and joint discomfort
- Stress and weight management (in combination products)
- Skin conditions (topical, traditional)
- Antimicrobial support
Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. Human evidence for most uses is limited, and it is often sold in combination with other herbs, making its individual effects hard to judge. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Finasteride
What Is Finasteride Used For?
Brand names: Propecia, Proscar
Finasteride tablets are used in men for two main purposes, depending on the product. Which one you take depends on the strength and brand your prescriber chose.
Enlarged prostate (BPH): Proscar and finasteride tablets labeled for BPH treat symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. They improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to urinate). They also reduce the risk of needing surgery such as TURP or prostatectomy. With the alpha-blocker doxazosin, they reduce the risk of BPH symptoms getting worse. They are not approved to prevent prostate cancer.
Male pattern hair loss: Propecia and finasteride tablets labeled for hair loss treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Efficacy in bitemporal recession (receding at the temples) has not been established. These products are not for use in women.
