Alfuzosin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for Uroxatral (alfuzosin). Your body clears this medication using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down a bit. If alfuzosin gets cleared more slowly, more of it can linger in your blood, which may make its effects stronger than intended.

For alfuzosin, that could mean more dizziness, lightheadedness when standing up, headache, or even fainting, since this drug relaxes blood vessels along with the prostate. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not a proven problem, so don't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Brand name: Uroxatral

Alfuzosin is used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urination difficult. It helps relax the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck so urine can flow more easily.

It is not approved to treat high blood pressure, and it is not for use in children or women.
