Here's the deal with Glucovance, which combines glyburide and metformin. The note we have on file is about how psyllium fiber can change the way your body soaks up metformin. Because psyllium turns into a thick gel in your gut, it may slow down and slightly increase how much metformin gets absorbed. In theory, that could make the medicine's blood sugar lowering a bit stronger.

I want to keep this in perspective though. This is based on lab-type evidence, not strong human studies, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. A simple fix is timing: take your Glucovance first, then your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes later. If you ever feel low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness), check it and let your pharmacist or doctor know.

Glyburide, Metformin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version: because psyllium turns into a thick gel in your stomach, it can change how quickly your Glucovance (glyburide plus metformin) is absorbed. The effect isn't predictable. It might slow things down, speed them up, or do nothing at all, so this is rated a minor interaction based on fairly limited evidence.

The thing to keep an eye on with this combo is your blood sugar. Glyburide especially can cause low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, feeling dizzy or confused), so any shift in how it's absorbed is worth noticing. An easy fix many people use is to take psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes after your medication. Before changing anything, run your timing past your pharmacist or doctor so you stay on track.
