Blond Psyllium and Metformin, Rosiglitazone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Blond Psyllium interacts with whole categories of medication. Metformin, Rosiglitazone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Blond Psyllium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

METFORMIN (Glucophage)

1 of 2
Theoretically, blond psyllium might increase the therapeutic and adverse effects of metformin.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with metformin slows and increases metformin absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after metformin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Avandamet is a combo tablet of metformin and rosiglitazone, both used to lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. The interaction we have on file is really about the metformin half. When psyllium's gel-like fiber sits in your gut at the same time as metformin, it can slow down and slightly change how much metformin your body soaks up. In theory, that could nudge metformin's effect a little, which might mean a bit more stomach upset or a slightly lower blood sugar.

Keep in mind this is based on lab-type evidence, not strong human studies, so the real-world impact is usually small. A simple fix many pharmacists suggest is spacing them out: take your Avandamet first, then your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes later. Run the timing by your pharmacist to be sure it fits your routine.

ORAL DRUGS

2 of 2

Why this applies to Metformin, Rosiglitazone

Metformin, Rosiglitazone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Avandamet combines two diabetes medicines, metformin and rosiglitazone. When you take blond psyllium close to your dose, that thick fiber gel can grab onto pills in your gut and shift how they get absorbed. The honest answer here is that the effect goes both ways. Animal studies actually showed psyllium delayed but slightly increased metformin absorption, so this isn't a clear-cut blocker.

What this means in real life: your blood sugar control could drift a little, and with metformin a bigger dose hitting at once might mean more stomach upset, nausea, or loose stools. This is rated minor and is mostly theoretical, so don't panic. The simplest fix is spacing: take your Avandamet first, then your psyllium about 30 to 60 minutes later. Check with your pharmacist if you'd like to confirm your timing.
