Why this applies to Dronedarone

Dronedarone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your body relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down dronedarone (Multaq). Lab research suggests that certain compounds in cubeb berries can slow this same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your body would clear dronedarone more slowly, letting it build up and possibly pushing its effects and side effects higher. With dronedarone, that could mean things like a slower heartbeat, dizziness, fatigue, stomach upset, or changes in how your heart's rhythm looks on an EKG.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern seen in test-tube studies, never confirmed in people, and a sprinkle of cubeb as a spice is unlikely to matter. Concentrated cubeb extracts or oils are a different story. Since dronedarone is a heart medication, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding any.

About Dronedarone

What Is Dronedarone Used For?

Brand name: Multaq

Multaq (dronedarone) tablets are used to reduce the risk of being hospitalized for atrial fibrillation (AF) — an irregular, often rapid heart rhythm. It is approved for adults who are currently in normal sinus rhythm but have a history of paroxysmal (comes and goes) or persistent atrial fibrillation.

Multaq is not appropriate for everyone with AF. It must not be used in people with permanent atrial fibrillation or in those with recently worsened heart failure requiring hospitalization — these patients face a doubled risk of death, stroke, and hospitalization if they take it.
