Why this applies to Triazolam

Triazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down triazolam and clear it out. In test-tube studies, some compounds in cubeb berries appear to slow that same enzyme. If that happened in your body, triazolam could hang around longer and build up, which might make its effects stronger than expected.

For a sleep medicine like triazolam, that could mean feeling extra drowsy or groggy, lingering next-morning sleepiness, dizziness, or trouble with balance and memory. Keep in mind this is only theoretical right now, based on lab work and never confirmed in people. A pinch of cubeb as a kitchen spice is unlikely to matter, but concentrated extracts or oils are a different story. Before combining them, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Triazolam Used For?

Brand names: Halcion, Triazo, Apo-Triazo, Gen-Triazolam, Mylan-Triazolam, Novo-Triolam, Nu-Triazo

Triazolam tablets are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Treatment is generally intended for 7 to 10 days. Halcion (a brand of triazolam) is specifically indicated for this same short-term use in adults.

Using triazolam for more than 2 to 3 weeks requires a full re-evaluation by your doctor to rule out an underlying medical or psychiatric condition driving the sleep problem.
