Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: this combination product contains two antacids (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide) that work by neutralizing stomach acid. There's a longstanding idea that cubebs may increase stomach acid. If that's true, cubebs could work against the antacid part, meaning you might not get as much heartburn or upset stomach relief as you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's theoretical and based only on anecdotal reports, so it's a fairly minor concern. A sprinkle of cubebs as a kitchen spice is unlikely to matter. Concentrated cubeb extracts or oils are where I'd be more cautious. None of this changes the aspirin or codeine portions. If you're using cubeb supplements regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Cubebs?

Cubebs
  • Coughs and bronchitis

  • Sore throat
  • Culinary spice

Cubebs are spicy, peppery berries from a vine in the pepper family that have long been used in traditional medicine for coughs, digestion, and urinary problems. Modern human studies are very limited, so its benefits are not well proven. Use it cautiously as a food spice, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts or oils.
