Why this applies to Sparfloxacin

Sparfloxacin falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Eleuthero interacts with.

Theoretically, eleuthero might increase levels of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eleuthero can inhibit the multi-drug transporter protein, P-glycoprotein. However, it is too soon to tell if this is clinically important. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Sparfloxacin (Zagam) and eleuthero. There's lab and animal data suggesting eleuthero can block a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which helps shuttle certain drugs out of your body. Since Sparfloxacin is partly handled by this transporter, the theory is that eleuthero could let a bit more of the drug build up than usual.

If that happened, you might notice more of Sparfloxacin's typical side effects, like stomach upset, headache, or sensitivity to sunlight. But honestly, this has never actually been reported in people, so it's a theoretical concern at this point. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially since this antibiotic is usually short-term anyway.

Sparfloxacin also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).

Theoretically, eleuthero might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by OATP.
In vitro research suggests that eleuthero inhibits OATP2B1, which might reduce the bioavailability of oral drugs that are substrates of OATP2B1. Due to the weak inhibitory effect identified in this study, this interaction is not likely to be clinically significant.

Here's the gist with Eleuthero and your antibiotic Sparfloxacin (Zagam). Lab studies suggest Eleuthero may gently block a gut transporter called OATP2B1, which helps shuttle certain medicines from your intestine into your bloodstream. In theory, that could mean your body absorbs a little less of the antibiotic, leaving slightly lower levels to fight your infection.

The good news: this is really only seen in test-tube research, and even there the blocking effect was weak. We don't have human studies showing it actually weakens Sparfloxacin in real life, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since this is an antibiotic you want working at full strength, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
