Ellagic Acid and Insulin Aspart

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Aspart

Insulin Aspart falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ellagic Acid interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that ellagic acid reduces fasting and postprandial glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are on stable doses of hypoglycemic agents such as metformin. Theoretically, taking ellagic acid with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: insulin aspart already does the heavy lifting of lowering your blood sugar after meals. Some early human research suggests ellagic acid can nudge blood sugar down a little more on its own. Stack the two together and the worry is that your levels could dip too low, which we call hypoglycemia.

For you, that might show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, sudden hunger, confusion, or feeling lightheaded. This isn't a strong or certain interaction, just a possible add-on effect, and it would mean watching your numbers more closely rather than panicking. Please don't change your insulin dose on your own. If you want to try an ellagic acid supplement, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep checking your blood sugar.

“Every one of the 239 supplements listed for insulin aspart (Fiasp) touches the same thing the drug exists to manage, blood sugar, so this list warrants genuine care rather than a quick skim. Most entries add to insulin's glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk of hypoglycemia, and with a rapid-acting mealtime insulin a low can become…”

About Ellagic Acid

What is Ellagic Acid?

  • Antioxidant support
  • General anti-aging or 'cleanse' products
  • Cancer prevention interest
  • Skin and beauty products
  • Heart and metabolic health

Ellagic acid is a natural plant compound (a polyphenol) found in foods like pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, and walnuts. It is studied mostly in laboratory and animal research for antioxidant and possible anti-cancer effects, but strong human evidence is lacking. Eating ellagic-acid-rich foods is healthy, but supplements are not proven to treat any disease, so check with a pharmacist or doctor before using them.

About Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection

What Is Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fiasp

Insulin aspart is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in people with diabetes mellitus. It is approved for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in adults, and for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients.

Insulin Aspart Protamine and Insulin Aspart Mix 70/30 is a pre-mixed product that combines a rapid-acting and an intermediate-acting insulin aspart. It is approved to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with diabetes mellitus. It is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis, and because its ratio of rapid-acting to intermediate-acting insulin is fixed, it does not allow for separate mealtime versus background dose adjustments.
