Metformin Hydrochloride falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ellagic Acid interacts with.

Some clinical research shows that ellagic acid reduces fasting and postprandial glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are on stable doses of hypoglycemic agents such as metformin. Theoretically, taking ellagic acid with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Here's the gist: ellagic acid supplements may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of their own. Some clinical research found that people with type 2 diabetes who took it alongside their usual medicine, including metformin, saw lower fasting and after-meal glucose numbers. On its own that sounds helpful, but stacking two glucose-lowering effects can push your sugar too low.

If your blood sugar dips, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or get a fast heartbeat. To be fair, metformin by itself rarely causes serious lows, so the risk here is modest. Eating pomegranates or berries is unlikely to be an issue, it's concentrated supplements that matter. If you want to add ellagic acid, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.
