STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Diphenhydramine, Phenylpropanolamine
Aspirin, Diphenhydramine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.
Some stimulant drugs include albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin), diethylpropion (Tenuate), dopamine, epinephrine, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed), and many others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece of this combo product that matters here is the phenylpropanolamine, which is a decongestant-type stimulant that tightens blood vessels. Ergot does the same thing in a much stronger way. Putting the two together can stack that vessel-squeezing effect, so in theory you could see higher blood pressure, a pounding headache, or cold, tingly fingers and toes. The aspirin and diphenhydramine parts aren't really the concern in this pairing.
To be fair, this is built on anecdotal reports, not solid studies, so it's more of a caution than a proven danger. Still, crude ergot is never something to take on your own. If you've been using any ergot product, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with a stimulant decongestant.

About Ergot
What is Ergot?
- Heavy menstrual or uterine bleeding
- Bleeding after childbirth
- Migraine headaches
- Stimulating uterine contractions
Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
