The part of this combo product to focus on here is the pseudoephedrine, the decongestant ingredient. Pseudoephedrine works by tightening blood vessels to dry up a stuffy nose, and ergot does something similar in a much more powerful way. When you stack two vessel-narrowing effects together, the worry is that blood vessels squeeze too much. That can show up as higher blood pressure, headache, cold or tingly hands and feet, or a racing, pounding heart.

Honestly, this is more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem, since it's based mostly on anecdotal reports. Ergot itself is toxic and shouldn't be used as a home supplement anyway. If you take any ergot-containing medicine, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
