Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

Here's the gist for Prevacid (lansoprazole). Your body uses liver enzymes, including one called CYP3A4, to help break this medicine down. Berberine, the main active compound in European barberry, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, lansoprazole could clear a little slower and build up in your system.

In plain terms, you might notice more of its usual effects, like headache, stomach upset, or diarrhea. The good news is this is only a theoretical concern based on lab pharmacology, not real patient reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Lansoprazole is also fairly forgiving with a wide safety margin. Still, since supplement doses of berberine can be concentrated, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
