First things first: European mandrake is toxic and we strongly recommend you don't take it at all. But here's the idea behind this particular interaction. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine-like compounds) slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your digestion slows, an oral medicine like ethambutol can linger longer in the gut, which in theory lets a bit more of it get absorbed into your body.

For ethambutol, more in your system could mean a higher chance of its known side effects, especially changes in vision (blurry sight or trouble telling red from green). Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals work, not solid human studies. Still, please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything with your TB treatment.

About Ethambutol

What Is Ethambutol Used For?

Brand names: Myambutol, Etibi

Ethambutol hydrochloride tablets are used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis — TB that affects the lungs. It must always be taken with at least one other anti-TB medication, never on its own.

For people being treated for TB for the first time, ethambutol is commonly paired with isoniazid, or with isoniazid and streptomycin. For people who have been treated for TB before, it is combined with other second-line anti-TB drugs chosen based on which medicines the bacteria are still sensitive to.
