First things first: I would never recommend taking European mandrake. It is a genuinely toxic plant, and there is no safe, proven use for it. So please treat this as an explanation, not a suggestion to try it.

Here is the idea behind the interaction with meprobamate. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine-like chemicals) slow down how fast your gut moves. When your gut moves more slowly, a pill like meprobamate can sit there longer and potentially get absorbed more completely. In theory, that could mean a stronger dose of meprobamate hitting your system, leading to more drowsiness, dizziness, slurred speech, or deep sedation. Meprobamate is already a strong tranquilizer, so extra sedation is the real concern.

This is a theoretical interaction based on how these chemicals behave, not solid human studies. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with meprobamate.

What Is Meprobamate Used For?

Brand names: Equanil, Miltown, Meprospan, Neuramate

Meprobamate tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It is intended for anxiety that rises to the level of a disorder — everyday stress and tension that most people experience generally do not require this type of medication.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
