Let me start with the most important thing: European mandrake is genuinely poisonous, and I would never recommend taking it in any form. It contains tropane alkaloids (like atropine and scopolamine) that can slow down your gut. The idea here is that when your digestive system moves more slowly, a pill like norgestrel (your progestin-only "mini-pill") may sit in your gut longer and get absorbed a bit more fully.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these chemicals behave, not something proven in real people taking norgestrel. Norgestrel isn't a prodrug, so slightly higher absorption would just mean a bit more hormone exposure, which is unlikely to be dangerous. The real danger is the mandrake itself. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with your birth control.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
