European Mandrake and Organophosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Organophosphate

Organophosphate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group European Mandrake interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use might increase absorption of some drugs because of inhibited gastrointestinal (GI) motility caused by European mandrake.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: this concern only really applies if you somehow took malathion (Ovide) by mouth. Ovide is a lotion you put on your scalp to kill head lice, so almost none of it should ever get inside your body the normal way. The interaction on file is purely theoretical, based on how these compounds behave, not on real cases.

The idea is that European mandrake can slow down your gut, and a slower gut can let a swallowed drug sit longer and be absorbed more. If oral malathion were absorbed more, you could see more of its toxic effects, like nausea, drooling, watery eyes, muscle twitching, or breathing trouble. Honestly, mandrake itself is poisonous and not safe to take at all. If you have any worries, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Organophosphate page

“Organophosphate lotion (Ovide) is a head lice treatment, and even though it goes on the scalp instead of down the throat, this list earns real caution. All 17 ingredients on file are things taken by mouth, mostly fibers, gums, and charcoals that change how much of a drug the body actually keeps.”
