First things first: European mandrake is a genuinely toxic plant, and I would steer you away from taking it at all. But here is the specific concern with your thyroid medication. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down the muscles of your gut, so food and pills sit in your digestive tract longer. In theory, that extra time could let your body absorb a bit more of your propylthiouracil than usual.

PTU is not a prodrug, so more absorption could simply mean a slightly stronger effect, possibly more side effects like nausea, rash, or joint aches. Honestly though, this is a theoretical worry based on how the plant works, not on real patient reports. The bigger issue is mandrake's own toxicity. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with PTU.

About Propylthiouracil

What Is Propylthiouracil Used For?

Brand name: Propylthiouracil

Propylthiouracil tablets are used to treat hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) in adults and, in rare cases, children. It is specifically for patients with Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter who cannot tolerate methimazole and for whom surgery or radioactive iodine therapy is not a suitable option.

Propylthiouracil is also used to control hyperthyroidism symptoms in preparation for thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery) or radioactive iodine therapy in patients who cannot take methimazole. It may be the preferred antithyroid drug during or just before the first trimester of pregnancy when an antithyroid medication is needed.
