Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine
Chlorpheniramine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combination product pairs an antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) with a decongestant (phenylpropanolamine), and part of how your body clears these is through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab and animal studies, evodia appears to slow that enzyme down. If that same effect happened in people, these drugs could linger a bit longer and build up, which might mean more drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or a jittery, racing-heart feeling and higher blood pressure from the decongestant side.
Here's the honest part: this is only seen in test tubes, not in actual patients, so it's theoretical and unproven. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since both ingredients can affect your heart and blood pressure, please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
