Evodia + Verapamil
Verapamil brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, and others.
Verapamil falls into 3 drug categories that Evodia can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Evodia interacts with whole categories of medication. Verapamil falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Evodia in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Verapamil
Verapamil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with verapamil and evodia. Evodia appears to speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and one of the pathways your body uses to clear verapamil involves this enzyme. If evodia revs that enzyme up, your body could clear verapamil a bit faster, leaving less of it working. That might mean weaker blood pressure control, less protection against chest pain, or a faster heart rate if you take it for rhythm problems.
Now, the honest part: this comes from lab and animal studies, not from people, and verapamil is mainly handled by a different enzyme (CYP3A4), so the real-world effect may be small. Still, please don't start, stop, or adjust anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS
2 of 3Verapamil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the key thing to know about this pairing: the concern runs toward the Evodia, not your verapamil. Verapamil is a CYP3A4 inhibitor, meaning it slows down a liver enzyme. Evodia's active compounds (like evodiamine) appear to be cleared by that same enzyme, so adding verapamil could let the herb build up to higher levels in your body, which might make its effects (and any side effects) stronger and longer-lasting.
I'll be honest with you, this is theoretical and comes only from animal and lab studies, so we don't really know how it plays out in people. Since verapamil is a heart and blood pressure medicine, I'd just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia rather than guessing.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
3 of 3Verapamil also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down verapamil. Lab studies (test tube only) suggest evodia may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a person, verapamil could clear more slowly and build up in the blood, which could mean a stronger effect than expected.
For verapamil, that might look like dizziness, lightheadedness, an unusually slow heartbeat, constipation, or blood pressure dropping too low. I want to be honest, though: this is only seen in lab research and hasn't been shown in actual patients, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Since verapamil affects your heart rate, it's still worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Verapamil page
“This is one of the longer interaction lists we publish, and with verapamil (Calan, Verelan) it warrants genuine care, starting with the ten major-rated entries. Verapamil lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so most of the 295 ingredients on file either push that effect further than intended or change how much of the drug reaches…”

Verapamil Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Verapamil as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Evodia — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
