Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the gist for naproxen. Your liver partly relies on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this pain reliever down, and evodia appears to speed that enzyme up. In theory, that means naproxen could clear out of your body a bit faster, which might make it work less well for things like arthritis pain, swelling, or stiffness.

Naproxen is not a prodrug, so there's no reverse effect to worry about here. I'll be honest with you though: this is based only on lab and animal studies (using caffeine and theophylline), so we really don't know how strong it is in people. If you notice your usual dose isn't controlling pain as well after adding evodia, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

In vitro and animal studies show that rutaecarpine, a constituent of evodia, inhibits platelet aggregation.

Here's the gist for Evodia and naproxen. Naproxen is an NSAID, and one of its known quirks is that it can make your blood a little slower to clot, which is why it sometimes causes stomach upset or, less often, bruising and bleeding. Evodia contains a compound called rutaecarpine that, at least in test tube and animal studies, seems to make platelets stickier... I mean, less likely to clump and form clots. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a bit higher.

I want to be straight with you: this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal data, not real people, so the concern is modest. Still, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or dark stools, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Naproxen

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
