Chanca Piedra and Naproxen

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the thing to know if you're pairing chanca piedra with naproxen: both can nudge your blood toward bleeding more easily. Naproxen is an NSAID, and on its own it can irritate the stomach lining and make platelets a little less sticky, which is why some people notice stomach upset, heartburn, or easier bruising. Lab studies hint that a compound in chanca piedra may also slow platelets from clumping together, so in theory the two stacked could raise your bleeding risk a bit.

I'll be straight with you though: this concern comes only from test-tube research and hasn't actually been seen in people, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, watch for signs like unusual bruising, dark stools, or stomach pain, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you take them regularly.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: lab studies hint that chanca piedra may speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down naproxen. If that happened in real life, your body might clear naproxen a little faster, so you could get less pain and anti-inflammatory relief from your usual dose. Naproxen isn't a prodrug, so faster breakdown means weaker effect, not stronger.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This has only been seen in test-tube research, never in actual people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Still, if you start chanca piedra and notice your arthritis or pain creeping back, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
