Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with diuretics might increase diuresis.
Some preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that chanca piedra has diuretic properties. However, higher quality research in adults with kidney stones shows taking chanca piedra does not increase urine volume when compared with placebo. Until more is known, use cautiously in patients taking diuretic drugs.

Here's the gist with hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide, Oretic) and chanca piedra. This isn't about one blocking or speeding up the other in the liver. Instead, chanca piedra has been studied as a mild 'water pill' on its own, so the worry is simply additive. Stack a possible diuretic herb on top of an actual diuretic and you could, in theory, lose a bit more fluid and salt than expected.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dehydrated, or unusually tired, and your sodium or potassium could drift. But I want to be honest: this is theoretical, based on how the plants might behave. The better human study (in people with kidney stones) showed no real increase in urine output. So the risk is probably small. Still, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if your blood pressure already runs low.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.

Here's the gist with chanca piedra and hydrochlorothiazide. This is mostly a theoretical concern. Some animal studies hint that chanca piedra might nudge blood pressure down a little. Since hydrochlorothiazide is already a water pill that lowers your blood pressure, the worry is that the two together could lower it a touch more than expected.

That said, the evidence here is thin. In a small study, most people with high blood pressure taking chanca piedra for about 10 days didn't actually see a meaningful drop. So real-world risk looks low. If you do try both, just keep an eye out for dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint when you stand up, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
