Warfarin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the gist for you. Lab and animal research suggests Evodia can rev up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to break down warfarin. If that enzyme works faster, your body could clear warfarin a little quicker, which may weaken its blood-thinning effect. With a drug like warfarin, even small shifts matter, because too little protection raises your risk of a clot.

Now, the honest part: this is based on test tube and animal studies, not solid human data, so we can't say exactly how much it would change your INR. Warfarin is finicky and watched closely with blood tests, so please don't add Evodia without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for warfarin. In lab studies (test tubes, not people), evodia appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that helps clear warfarin from your body. If that slowdown actually happened in a real person, warfarin could build up a bit and thin your blood more than intended. With warfarin, even small shifts matter, because too much can lead to easy bruising, nosebleeds, or more serious bleeding.

The important part: this is only a theoretical concern from animal and test-tube research, and it has never been shown in humans. Still, because warfarin is so finicky, I'd run any evodia supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't start or stop anything on your own.

Theoretically, taking evodia with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro and animal studies show that rutaecarpine, a constituent of evodia, inhibits platelet aggregation.

Here's the gist with warfarin and evodia. Warfarin is a blood thinner with a very narrow safety window, so even small nudges in either direction can matter. One compound in evodia, called rutaecarpine, has shown in test tube and animal studies that it can make platelets (the cells that help your blood clot) less sticky. Layer that on top of warfarin, and you could theoretically tip toward easier bruising or bleeding, things like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in the urine or stool.

That said, this is weak, early evidence, mostly lab and animal work, not human studies. So I'm not raising alarm bells. Still, because warfarin is so dose-sensitive, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding evodia, and don't change your warfarin on your own.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
