Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
The evodia constituent rutaecarpine is metabolized by CYP1A2.

Here the concern runs the opposite way from what you might expect. In this case, your citalopram is acting on the Evodia, not the other way around. Citalopram can lightly block a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and one of Evodia's active compounds (rutaecarpine) is cleared by that same enzyme. So the worry is that Evodia could build up a bit higher than usual in your body.

Honestly, this is purely theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. We don't even have solid human data on what too much Evodia does. Still, since Evodia isn't well studied and citalopram is an important medication, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa) and Evodia. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear citalopram. In lab dish studies, Evodia appears to slow that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in people, your body would clear citalopram a little less efficiently, so the drug could build up slightly. In theory that might mean more of the usual side effects, like nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth, or trouble sleeping.

I want to be honest, though: this is only seen in test tube research, not in actual patients, so it may not matter in real life. One thing worth knowing is that high doses of citalopram can affect heart rhythm, so it's smart to run any Evodia use past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
