Evodia + Prednisone
Prednisone brand names: Deltasone, Cortan, Orasone, Prednisone, Prednicen-M, and others.
Prednisone falls into 2 drug categories that Evodia can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Evodia interacts with whole categories of medication. Prednisone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Evodia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS
1 of 2Why this applies to Prednisone
Prednisone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something a little different about this pairing. The interaction on file isn't really about Evodia changing your prednisone levels. It's the other way around. Prednisone can act as a mild blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme helps break down Evodia's active compounds. So in theory, taking them together could let Evodia build up a bit higher than usual, which might make Evodia's own effects or side effects stronger.
I'll be honest with you: this comes only from lab and animal studies, so it's theoretical and we don't have real human data. It's not a reason to panic. Still, before adding Evodia to your prednisone routine, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor, since herbal products and steroids both deserve a careful look.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Prednisone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Evodia and prednisone. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear prednisone. In lab studies (test tubes only), compounds in evodia appear to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in people, prednisone could hang around longer and feel a bit stronger, which might mean more of its usual side effects like trouble sleeping, mood swings, a bigger appetite, fluid retention, or higher blood sugar.
I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical. It has only been seen in laboratory work, never confirmed in humans, so the real-world risk is probably small. Still, since evidence on evodia is thin, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prednisone page
“Prednisone (Deltasone) suppresses the immune system to control inflammation, and that mechanism shapes most of what can go wrong on this 208-ingredient list, which I read as one to approach carefully rather than casually. Four entries rate major.”
