Esomeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the basic idea with Evodia and your esomeprazole (Nexium). Lab studies suggest Evodia may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the routes your body uses to clear esomeprazole. If that pathway is partly blocked, a little more of the drug could hang around than usual.

In practice, that might mean slightly stronger or longer-lasting effects, possibly more headache, nausea, or stomach upset. The good news: this is only seen in test tubes, not in people, so it's theoretical. Esomeprazole is also generally forgiving, so a small bump usually isn't dangerous. Still, since human data is missing, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Esomeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Nexium

Esomeprazole treats problems caused by excess stomach acid. It's used to heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), control GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms like heartburn, and protect the stomach lining in people at risk for ulcers caused by NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen).

It's also used as part of a three-drug combination to wipe out H. pylori — a stomach bacteria linked to ulcers — and for people with rare conditions that cause the stomach to overproduce acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
