Esomeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Green tea is unlikely to produce clinically significant changes in the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.

Here's the good news if you enjoy a cup of green tea with your Nexium (esomeprazole): this pairing is really nothing to lose sleep over. Lab studies suggest green tea might tinker a little with an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps process esomeprazole, but in actual people that effect doesn't seem to hold up. The signals point in opposite directions (slowing the enzyme in the gut, speeding it up in the liver), and they basically cancel out.

So in everyday terms, drinking green tea shouldn't make your esomeprazole work any stronger or any weaker, and it shouldn't add side effects like headache or stomach upset. If you're using concentrated green tea extract pills rather than the beverage, just mention that to your pharmacist to be safe.

What Is Esomeprazole Used For?

Brand name: Nexium

Esomeprazole treats problems caused by excess stomach acid. It's used to heal erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), control GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) symptoms like heartburn, and protect the stomach lining in people at risk for ulcers caused by NSAIDs (anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen).

It's also used as part of a three-drug combination to wipe out H. pylori — a stomach bacteria linked to ulcers — and for people with rare conditions that cause the stomach to overproduce acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
