Green Tea and Amphetamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Amphetamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Green tea contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: green tea naturally contains caffeine, and caffeine is a stimulant just like your amphetamine medication. When you stack two stimulants together, their effects can pile on top of each other. So the concern isn't that green tea changes how your body breaks down the amphetamine, it's that the caffeine adds to the same kind of side effects.

With amphetamine, that could mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, feeling jittery or anxious, higher blood pressure, or trouble sleeping. Keep in mind this is mostly expert opinion, not hard proof, and a cup or two of green tea is usually mild. Concentrated green tea extracts pack more punch. If you notice your heart racing or you feel wired, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

2 of 2

Amphetamine also falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs).

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture for green tea and your amphetamine. The interaction on file actually describes how green tea's caffeine might bump up blood pressure when it's combined with MAOI-type medicines. Amphetamine itself isn't an MAOI, but it works in a related way by boosting the same stimulating brain chemicals (like norepinephrine and dopamine). So stacking it with a lot of caffeine from green tea can add to that stimulant effect.

In real terms, that could mean a faster heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or higher blood pressure. A cup or two of green tea is unlikely to be a problem for most people. Concentrated green tea extract pills, or drinking large amounts all day, are where I'd be more cautious. If you notice a pounding heart or feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Green Tea

What is Green Tea?

Green Tea
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight loss
  • Heart health
  • Mental alertness
  • Cancer risk reduction

Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
