Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Green tea is unlikely to produce clinically significant changes in the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down diazepam (Valium). Green tea has been shown in test tube and animal studies to nudge this enzyme in a couple of directions, but in actual people it doesn't seem to meaningfully change how much diazepam is in your system.

So in practice, drinking green tea with your diazepam is unlikely to make you noticeably more drowsy, dizzy, or foggy, and it isn't expected to weaken the calming effect either. This is rated minor and the evidence is weak (lab-based, not human studies). If you take concentrated green tea extract pills rather than a cup or two of tea, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
