Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Green Tea interacts with.

Green tea is unlikely to produce clinically significant changes in the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro and in vivo research suggests that green tea can inhibit intestinal CYP3A and induce hepatic CYP3A4 enzymes. However, this effect is unlikely to be clinically significant, as green tea does not appear to affect CYP3A4 activity in humans.

Here's the good news if you enjoy a cup of green tea while fighting a cough: this combination is really not something to lose sleep over. Your body partly clears dextromethorphan using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test tube studies, green tea seemed to nudge this enzyme in different directions, but in actual people it doesn't appear to meaningfully change how the enzyme works.

So in plain terms, drinking green tea is very unlikely to make dextromethorphan stronger or weaker. You shouldn't expect extra drowsiness, dizziness, or a weaker cough effect from the tea. Concentrated green tea extract pills are a bit more potent, so if you take those, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist, but normal beverage amounts are fine.

What Is Dextromethorphan Used For?

Brand names: Hold, Benylin Adult, Benylin Pediatric, Theraflu Thin Strips Long Acting Cough, Neo Citran Thin Strips Cough

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
