Green Tea + Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline
Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline brand name: Tedral.
Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline falls into 4 drug categories that Green Tea can interact with; the most serious is rated major. Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk for stimulant adverse effects.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Green Tea interacts with whole categories of medication. Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Green Tea in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).
EPHEDRINE
1 of 4Green tea contains caffeine. There is evidence that using ephedrine with caffeine might increase the risk of serious life-threatening or debilitating adverse effects such as hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, seizures, and death.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to watch with Tedral: it contains ephedrine, a stimulant, plus theophylline, which is closely related to caffeine. Green tea naturally carries caffeine too, so you're really stacking stimulant on top of stimulant. That combination can push your heart and blood pressure harder than you'd want. People may feel a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, headache, or shakiness, and in rare cases it has been tied to very serious problems like dangerous blood pressure spikes or heart rhythm issues.
This warning leans heavily on caffeine plus ephedrine reports, so it's more anecdotal than rock-solid, and a casual cup of green tea is far gentler than concentrated extract pills. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially with the extract form.

STIMULANT DRUGS
2 of 4Why this applies to Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline
Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Green Tea interacts with.
Green tea contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: green tea naturally contains caffeine, and your Tedral combo already includes two stimulants of its own (ephedrine and theophylline). Stacking caffeine on top can pile on the same kinds of effects, so you might feel jittery, have a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, shakiness, or feel anxious and on edge.
This is a theoretical concern based mostly on expert opinion, not strong studies, so a normal cup or two of green tea probably won't cause trouble for most people. The bigger worry is concentrated green tea extract pills, which deliver a lot more caffeine. Theophylline can be touchy at higher levels, so if you notice your heart pounding or feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

THEOPHYLLINE
3 of 4Ephedrine, Phenobarbital, Theophylline also falls under THEOPHYLLINE.
Green tea contains caffeine. Large amounts of caffeine might inhibit theophylline metabolism.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep an eye on with Tedral: it contains theophylline, which your liver clears using the same enzymes that handle caffeine. Green tea has caffeine too, and in larger amounts that caffeine may slow down how fast theophylline is broken down. The result is that theophylline can build up a little higher than expected.
Why does that matter? Theophylline already has a narrow safety window. When levels creep up, you may notice jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, nausea, trouble sleeping, or feeling shaky. A cup or two of green tea now and then likely won't do much, but concentrated green tea extracts or heavy daily intake are more of a concern. This is based on the caffeine effect rather than strong trials, so don't panic, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding green tea supplements.

PHENOBARBITAL (Luminal)
4 of 4Green tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that caffeine can decrease the anticonvulsant activity of phenobarbital. The exact mechanism of this interaction is unclear.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This older combination product (Tedral) pairs phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms seizures, with theophylline and ephedrine for breathing. The interaction here centers on the phenobarbital piece. Green tea contains caffeine, and in animal studies caffeine seemed to blunt phenobarbital's seizure-calming activity. In theory, that could make phenobarbital a little less effective and, in someone using it for seizures, slightly raise the chance of a seizure breaking through.
I want to be honest with you: this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a normal cup of tea. Concentrated green tea extracts (with more caffeine) are a bigger question mark. Since this drug needs steady levels to work, just run your green tea habit by your pharmacist or doctor before adding supplements.

About Green Tea
What is Green Tea?
- Antioxidant support
- Weight loss
- Heart health
- Mental alertness
- Cancer risk reduction
Green tea is a popular beverage rich in antioxidants called catechins, and drinking it in normal amounts is considered safe for most people. Concentrated green tea extracts are a different story—they may help modestly with weight or heart health for some, but high doses have been linked to rare liver problems. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking green tea supplements, especially if you have liver concerns or are pregnant.
