Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea behind this one. Prednisone is often prescribed to quiet down an overactive immune system, say for arthritis flares, lupus, severe allergies, or certain lung conditions. The probiotics in fermented milk (think kefir or some yogurts) may gently nudge the immune system in the opposite direction, giving it a small boost. On paper, that could slightly work against what prednisone is trying to do.

I want to be honest with you though: this is theoretical, based on how things work in the lab and on general pharmacology, not on real cases of people losing control of their condition. For most folks, a serving of yogurt or kefir isn't going to undo your prednisone. If you have a weakened immune system or take high doses, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding concentrated probiotic supplements.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Prednisone page

“Prednisone (Deltasone) suppresses the immune system to control inflammation, and that mechanism shapes most of what can go wrong on this 208-ingredient list, which I read as one to approach carefully rather than casually. Four entries rate major.”
