Nitrofurantoin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this one runs the opposite way from most interactions. Nitrofurantoin won't hurt you because of the yogurt or kefir, but the antibiotic can hurt the good bugs in your fermented milk. Nitrofurantoin kills bacteria to clear your urinary infection, and it can't tell the difference between troublemakers and the friendly lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in those probiotic products. Take them at the same time and many of those live cultures may not survive.

This is theoretical, based on how antibiotics behave, so don't stress about it. Your nitrofurantoin will still work fine. If you want the probiotic benefit, simply space them out by about 2 hours. As always, run any questions by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
