Fermented Milk and Bacitracin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Bacitracin

Bacitracin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a small wrinkle worth knowing. The concern here isn't that fermented milk changes how bacitracin works, it's the other way around. Bacitracin is an antibiotic, so if any of it reaches the live probiotic bacteria in fermented milk (like lactobacilli or bifidobacteria), it could kill some of them off and water down the gut-health benefit you were hoping to get from that yogurt or kefir.

Now, in real life this matters most with antibiotics you swallow. Bacitracin is almost always used as a skin ointment for cuts, scrapes, and burns, and that stays on the skin, so it's very unlikely to bump into your fermented milk at all. This is a theoretical caution drawn from pharmacology, not a proven problem. If you're ever taking an oral form, separating the two by at least 2 hours is the easy fix. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure which form you have.
