Sertraline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INHIBITORS — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and clinical effects of evodia.
Animal research shows that concomitant administration of ketoconazole, a known CYP3A4 inhibitor, with the alkaloid constituents of evodia significantly increases the area under the curve (AUC), maximum concentration (Cmax), and half-life of these constituents.

Here's the gist for this pairing: the interaction we have on file runs in the opposite direction from what people usually worry about. It's not that Evodia changes your sertraline (Zoloft) levels. Instead, sertraline can act as a mild blocker of a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme helps clear Evodia's active compounds (like evodiamine and rutaecarpine). So in theory, sertraline could let Evodia build up a bit more than expected.

Honestly, this is very weak evidence, drawn only from test tube and animal studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. We simply don't have good human data here. Since Evodia itself isn't well studied and isn't something I'd recommend casually, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Theoretically, evodia might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval, potentially increasing the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Evodia has demonstrated dose-dependent activity as a proarrhythmic agent in animal and in vitro studies. Evodia infusion in animals extends the action duration potential and induces prolongation of the QT interval and Torsade de pointes.

Here's the gist with Zoloft (sertraline) and evodia. This one isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. It's about your heart's rhythm. Sertraline can, in some people, slightly stretch out a part of the heartbeat doctors call the QT interval. In animal and test-tube studies, evodia has done the same thing. Stacking two things that both nudge in that direction could, in theory, raise the small risk of an irregular heartbeat.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: it's theoretical and based on lab and animal research, not real patients taking both together, so I wouldn't panic. Still, because it touches heart rhythm, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding evodia, especially if you have any heart concerns.

Sertraline also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Evodia and Zoloft (sertraline). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break sertraline down. In test tube studies, compounds in evodia seem to slow that enzyme. If that happened in your body, sertraline might clear a little more slowly and build up, which could mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, headache, trouble sleeping, jitteriness, or stomach upset.

I want to be honest about the evidence though: this comes only from lab research, and it has not been seen in real people. Sertraline isn't a prodrug, so the direction would be more drug, not less. Cooking amounts likely don't matter, but concentrated supplements are a bigger unknown. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Sertraline Used For?

Brand name: Zoloft

Sertraline treats a range of mental health conditions. All formulations are approved for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The oral solution (including Zoloft oral solution) and several tablet formulations are also approved for panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

For OCD specifically, the capsule formulations and some tablet products are approved for use in adults and children aged 6 and older. Sertraline hydrochloride tablets (plain, not film-coated) are approved for OCD in pediatric patients as well. However, sertraline is not approved for major depressive disorder in children — only in adults.
